York in the Rising of the North of 1569: the Royal Administration’s City Defense Strategies and the Council of the North’s Crisis Management

The author analyses the measures taken by the royal administration of the city of York to suppress the Northern Rebellion of 1569. As the second largest city in the kingdom and a key commercial, political and religious center of the North, York was of great strategic importance. The participation of the city’s population in the rebellion could have signifi cantly infl uenced the success of the uprising and led to changes in the state structure of England, and even resulted in a change of monarch. The relevance of this work is due to the need to study the measures taken by the royal administration of York to suppress the Northern Rebellion of 1569, which reveal tactics for ensuring the loyalty of the population, countering rebellions and maintaining political control. The scientifi c novelty of the work lies in an attempt to fi ll the gap in knowledge about the role of the city of York in the 1569 rebellion through a comprehensive analysis of events with an emphasis on examining the administrative, military and propaganda strategies of the royal administration aimed at protecting York. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Earl of Sussex’s crisis management, including the mobilization of resources and control of information. The main conclusion of the article is that, despite the diffi cult socioeconomic situation in York, the timely and coordinated actions of the Earl of Sussex and his supporters made it possible to prevent the capture of the city and suppress the rebellion.
