The article examines religious deviation from the perspective of J. Habermas's concept. The German sociologist's main ideas formed the basis of a systems-communications approach that rethinks the essence of religion and religious deviation. The former is understood as a worldview that includes belief in religious truths, a reflection and generalization of an individual's religious beliefs, according to which they function in society. The main factors for the emergence of religious deviation, which are divided into internal and external, are discussed in detail. Internal factors in the genesis of religious deviance include legal nihilism, unequal treatment of members of other confessions, religious discrimination, etc. The external ones include the collapse of the unipolar world, the violation of international law, and the crisis of globalization. The results of the study, based on the methodology of systems analysis applied, contribute to the realization that religion plays an important role in the life of modern society; the scientific works of the German thinker can help to effectively confront religious deviation.
