Language as a reflection of history, culture and worldview is one of the best sources for studying the mentality of any nation. Traditions, historical events and attitude to life realities are reflected in many aspects of the language. This article deals with some general literary and linguoculturological aspects of English humor in literature. Writers, in portraying humor, identify some of the literary devices commonly used in literature. It should be noted that the word "humor" was not used in its current funny sense until the 18th century. The most important philosophers, such as Plato, Hobbes, and Kant, wrote only a few paragraphs about laughter or humor as part of their discussion of other issues. The purpose of the work is to study the national-specific properties of humor based on the English literature of the twentieth century. The article talks about the unique authorial style of English writers in depicting humor.
