The article is devoted to the analysis of the life path and religious-philosophical outlook of an outstanding representative of the early 20th century “Russian religious renaissance”, a prominent philosopher, legal scholar, publicist, eminent public figure, Prince Evgeny Nikolaevich Trubetskoy (1863-1920). E. N. Trubetskoy’s participation in the formation of the ideological program of “The Way” publishing house and the Vl. Solovyov Moscow Religious-Philosophical Society in active collaboration with the well-known philanthropist M. K. Morozova is considered. The Prince is characterized as a liberal Christian and an ideologically very complex figure of a controversial pre-revolutionary era, who has undergone ideological evolution and is not amenable to unambiguous assessment. It is shown that the adherence to the universalist views of his elder friend and teacher Vl. S. Solovyov, which, despite certain disagreements, he strove to preserve throughout his life, prevented him from gaining a national vision of the “Russian idea”. However, based on the study of the thinker’s later works, the author comes to the conclusion that under the influence of the catastrophic events of the Great War, two revolutions and the Civil War, Trubetskoy followed the path of gaining a deeper understanding of Orthodox Russia.
