The article discusses various forms of time in the works written by Ivan Shmelev. A particular attention is given to the perfect time, which is revealed in the writer’s narrative in the form of notes and reminiscences; the epistolary time, which allows the author to reproduce the inner monologue of the protagonist; the sequential time, which is reflected in the exact likeness with the real time. The writer embeds images into the thread of a realistically reproduced life, thanks to which a phenomenon of consumer confusion is created. The time of synodic narrative appears in the author’s works styled on the order of a historical source. The works were processed by the creative aspiration of a large number of readers whose personal vision can be traced in the final text. The author through a complex organization of temporal patterns of artistic narrative helps the reader to shape the perception and understanding of his art work. For this particular reason the texts written by I. S. Shmelev are predominantly based on monologues in which the author is a leader, and a reader acts as a follower. These artistic features of the text make his works congenial with medieval didactic works.
