The article is a review of V. K. Shokhin's monograph “The Philosophy of Practical Reason: An Agathological Project”, published in 2020 by Vladimir Dahl Publishing House. It considers the author's interpretation and history of the term “agathology” in the framework of the discipline of practical philosophy, as well as the contemporary division of philosophy into disciplines, the historical and philosophical analysis of “the good” from the ancient Indian polemic to Hegel's system and the theoretical part of agathology. It shows that, guided by the logical method of the remainder, V. K. Shokhin makes an a posteriori attempt to confirm / refute the a priori hypothesis of J. Moore about the uncertainty of the concept of “the good”. Summing up the analysis of three “torn paths” in theoretical ethics - deontologism, consequentialism and aretism, the author proposes a fourth, “non-torn path”, rid of the shortcomings of previous “mega programs”, an agathological project. In general, the monograph is characterized in the review as a unique contribution to the coverage and rehabilitation of the unjustly forgotten practical philosophy, crisis-stricken and being in the shadow of the theoretical one.
