The article attempts to draw a comparison between the key features of the classical feudalism that existed in Europe between the XI and XV centuries and its more modern counterpart, which has been called “neo-feudalism”. The study reveals the historical reasons for the persistence and conservation of the social and political traits that reproduce the essence of such a phenomenon. The main focus is on the phenomenon of neofeudalism itself as an essential feature of the socio-political and cultural reality of Russian society. The study reveals its origins, referring to the ideal type - feudalism, considering it as a phenomenon and the cultural basis of patrimonial relations rooted in the practice of interaction between power and society. The conclusion is that Russia's is civilizational structure rests on historical attitudes, partially determined by archaic norms and values that have shown their effectiveness in the past. Moreover, stability in Russian society is supported by a strong state authority and the stability of citizens' beliefs in the sanctity of traditions. Under these circumstances, it is noted that neofeudalism appears as a societal phenomenon that serves to explain the interrelations between society and the state in modern Russia.
