The article examines the issue of shaping universal competences in tertiary education in a present-day situation characterized by volatility, uncertainty, non-linearity and incomprehensibility. The relevance of this topic is related to the changes in the educational paradigm, in which the competence approach is a prerequisite for the professional training of future specialists in tertiary education and requires continuous improvement of their teaching methods. It is emphasized that universal competences are related to the concept of soft skills (soft skills), which along with hard skills (professional skills) are actively demanded by employers and therefore their presence determines the competitiveness of graduates in the labor market. It is noted that not only methods of shaping universal competences play a crucial role, but also the personality of the teacher, who is able to continuously improve and be upon the look for new professional knowledge; the level of teacher-student interaction; the quality of the educational environment aimed at the development of the learner and his/her personal potential. Attention is drawn to the fact that, due to the constant changes in the social and educational environment, this topic needs to be further developed.
