This article examines the words’ usage of G.A. Matveev in pedagogical communication with students in the context of his personality traits. To study the repeatedly used G.A. Matveev in the pedagogical communication of words and phrases used the method of semantic nests and psychosemantic methods (only qualitative data processing was carried out without statistical calculations). The Amur coach in words and deeds was a self-confident person, he interacted with students and colleagues confidently, kindly, with a cheerful attitude, sought to praise and inspire self-confidence in his students (these are the features of his Self). Aggressiveness, discontent, condemnation, etc., i.e. shadow qualities of his personality, he could show a little in the direction of his family for educational purposes. These same traits were largely reflected in his attitude towards anti-Russian politicians in the near and far abroad. Gennady Afanasyevich attached great importance to language and speech in the process of teaching chess. Calling his students «Altmeister», «Großmeister», «Maestro», he changed the perception of reality by his students at the level of the imaginary (speech) and symbolic (language), and thereby encouraged them to improve their chess skills.
