The article analyzes the term "national theater" as a special type of theater that became most widespread during the Soviet period, as part of the implementation of national and cultural policies implemented by the Soviet government. The author of the article notes the insufficient coverage of this term in the reference literature of both the Soviet and post-Soviet periods. At the same time, special attention is paid to the study of materials from dictionaries and reference books of a theatrical orientation, in which the term "national theater", as the researcher states, is not represented. As a result, the author, by identifying the main features inherent in the national theater of the Soviet country, namely the national language, the specific repertoire, the synthetic nature of theatrical techniques, the international character of the troupe and others, proposed his own term "national theater" as a special type of professional theater that was developed in the twentieth century. In conclusion, the author concludes that this type of theater undoubtedly plays an important role, including for the formation of a tolerant attitude towards various nations living within the same territory. The author of the article emphasizes the idea of the expediency of the existence of such theaters in the modern conditions of the implementation of the cultural policy of the Russian Federation, as history confirms this fact.
