In the article we have analyzed the genre originality of N. M. Karamzin’s "History of the Russian State". Karamzin created the book in a synthesized genre, which was based on combination of purely historiographical traditions and the methods of word-painting. Merging of these elements explains the large number of reliable facts, documented by Karamzin directly with figurative elements, thus the artistry comes to the fore. We have highlighted the main features of genre poetics in the work. Chronicle syncretism helped the author to express Russian national consciousness in its dynamics and development, as well as to work out the specific epic style of narration about heroism of the Russian nation. By the means of political journalism N. M. Karamzin revealed the problems of national and social division of mankind in "History of the Russian State", and emphasized the need to overcome this separation. Representation of people in their drive for conscious historical activity; presence of a “transitional” character, "spatial" and internal overcoming of individual co-existence limits made up the essence of presentment. The narrative duality of the work reflected in uncertainty of "individual world" and "common world", the history and a human. The systematic approach in expression of figurative genre features of Karamzin’s "History of the Russian State" makes it possible to say that the composition is synthesized in its nature and connects the historical, philosophical, journalistic, and artistic discoveries.
