In the article the cabinets of different European countries from XVIIc. to XXc. are described. Cabinet is (Fr. cabinet – study room) – 1) arch. – a room; 2) a collection of specimen, especially of biological or numismatic character; 3) piece of furniture. Cabinet is a piece of furniture. In the beginning, in XVIIc, it was a small richly decorated cupboard. Then the cabinet consisted of two parts. The main part contains drawers and niches which are hidden behind the shutters and stand on either two ebony columns, or on caryatids or on a table. Cabinet as a room. In XVIIc. a room furnished with a number of cabinets (pieces of furniture) was called a cabinet.
