The Kalmyk Epic “Jangar” in the German Rendering by F. Erdmann (1857): Composition, Poetics, Worldview
The article presents the first comprehensive analysis of the German adaptation of the Kalmyk epic Jangar, produced by F. Erdmann and published in 1857 in the “Zeitschrift der Deutschen Morgenländischen Gesellschaft” (based on A. Bobrovnikov’s Russian translation of 1854). The relevance of this study is determined by the fact that Erdmann’s publication represents the first attempt in European scholarship to present the Kalmyk epic as a coherent work rather than a collection of disparate motifs, while simultaneously documenting the state of the oral performative tradition prior to its academic canonization in the twentieth century. The aim of the article is a comprehensive analysis of Erdmann’s adaptation as an independent document of epic transmission, possessing its own strategy, poetics, and scholarly apparatus. The study reconstructs the socio-cultural context of the epic’s circulation in the first half of the 19th century and examines the macrocomposition of the text, which includes a framing device, a feast-catalogue, and the dynamic cycles of the lot and the campaign. The poetics of the adaptation are analyzed, including the stability of epic formulas, number symbolism, the image of the horse as a co-agent, and the worldview synthesis of Buddhist and archaic heroic strata. Particular attention is given to Erdmann’s apparatus of notes, which constitutes the first systematic ethnographic and textological commentary on Jangar in European scholarship, capturing the variability of the oral tradition before its academic canonization. The article concludes that the German adaptation is not a surrogate of the original but an independent monument of epic transmission and an invaluable source for the history of both Russian and European Mongolian studies in the nineteenth century.
