The article is devoted to the consideration of the category of "value" in the philosophical and cultural dimension, which involves critical reflective analytics of concepts used in the sciences of culture and cultural studies, as well as the context of the distinction between mind and reason. It is generally accepted that rational thinking in itself is indifferent to values, but that rational thinking is inherent in the obligatory orientation to values. However, the article substantiates the thesis that “value orientation” is inherent in the mind. The dialectical reason, able to work adequately with the category of “ideal”, does not need the services of value thinking. The idea is substantiated that the definition of the sphere of culture through the category of “value” suffers from some one-sidedness and does not allow revealing its content as a basis that generates human being.
