The category of theatricality in Daniel Kehlmann’s Tyll

Statement of the problem. The phenomenon of theatricality is an important issue for a wide range of sciences, including literary studies. Daniel Kehlmann’s creative work may be quite interesting from this point of view. The purpose of the article is to analyze the category of theatricality in D. Kehlmann’s “Tyll” (2017). Review of scientific literature on the problem. Germanists in Russia and abroad pay much attention to D. Kehlmann’s novels, but “Tyll” is surely not investigated enough, although it is unanimously recognized as the pinnacle of his work. The category of theatricality in this novel has not been specially analyzed yet. The culture-historical and structural-semiotic methods are used in the research. Research results. The category of theatricality is actualized on different levels of the novel’s structure, but it is primarily connected with the image of Tyll which is created in compliance with the traditions of the German medieval theater, as well as with the image of Liz which feels and acts like an actress on a big stage.
