The phenomenon of «Caucasianess» in Russian Literature of the first half of the 19th century is considered in the context of the general imperial perception. This article traces the fate of such novels as «A Black Year or the Mountain Princes» by Vasily Narezhniy and «Escapades in the Caucasus » by Ekaterina Lachinova, caused resonance in cultural life of that time. The complex of national and state ideas about Caucasus in fiction and nonfiction discourse of Leo Tolstoy is represented: «I discovered that there is immortality, that there is love, and that one must live for others».
