Case method in teaching a foreign language at the level of basic general education (using the example of teaching English)

The article is devoted to the problem of using the case method in teaching a foreign language (English) at the level of basic general education. It has been established that this method, based on learning by solving specific problem situations (cases), refers to non-game simulation active learning methods. The article defines the goals and types of case methods and presents the following types of their classification by structure, format, time features and content. In addition, the complex nature of the case method is emphasized. It is noted that the case method can be successfully used in teaching a foreign language for students to apply their linguistic skills in combination with analytical and interpersonal skills in search of a case solution. The case method helps to realize the main goal of teaching a foreign language – the formation of foreign language communicative competence. The importance of taking into consideration the characteristic features of adolescent students while planning the process of education is emphasized. The article analyzes the stages of working with cases in teaching a foreign language, provides some recommendations for using this method at the level of basic general education. Case method study materials on the topic “Why should we stay away from fast food?” are presented as an example for the lesson of English in the 6th grade of a secondary school.
