Targeting is the current problematic issue in social work with families that is the reason for the irrational waste of social resources and a failure to solve the problems of people being in desperate need of help. The study reveals the theoretical basis of case technology as a tool to implement a targeted approach to social work with a family. The main types of case technologies are highlighted and described depending on the purpose, focus on the object or subject, forms and methods in their structure. These technologies play a prominent role in addressing family problems and can be regarded as promising for social work practice. Case technology is becoming increasingly important in modern Russian social security system in the context of budgetary constraints and challenges caused by the current economic situation and faced by many residents. Nowadays, many researchers and practitioners treat the targeting principle as a priority for the arrangement and enhancement of the social security system for people in acute need of social rehabilitation. Besides, there is a growing demand for further development of targeting mechanisms.
