The present article deals with the China faces the specific difficult ecological challenges in agriculture. On one hand, we observe the high economic growth, especially since the economic reforms for last two or more decades. On the other hand, the buildup in livestock is destroying vast areas of grassland. China's agricultural production intensification coupled with crop yield and livestock productivity increase has led to soil degradation and fertility decrease as well as to deterioration of environment. All this necessitates ecologically sound and economically effective methods. Also the article is based on the data on rural development in China in the beginning of the 21st century. Demographic and land endowment issues, questions of rural economy growth, ecological, financial and social issues in the countryside form the background of the analysis. The authors focused on the recent rural policy assessments in China, which show growing concerns for social situation in the countryside on the part of the leadership. This new approach may become a base for more optimistic insights into the future of China's agriculture in transitions toward sustainable development.
