The article presents an analysis of various classifications of verbal vocabulary developed in native and foreign linguistics of the XX ‒ XXI centuries and based on different aspectual attributes. There are theories of Russian linguists (Admoni V. G., Moskalskaya O. I., Gulyga E. G., Nedyalkov V. P., Muryasov R. Z., Bodnaruk E. V.) and theories of foreign researchers (Helbig G., Bush J., Brinkmann H.) on the category of the aspectuality related to German verbs, means of expressing modes of action in modern German. In particular it is argued that the primary division of verbs into terminative / non-terminative is fundamental. Among the latter, one should single out smaller categories of verb-carriers of aspectual attributes. Moreover, the lexical meaning of the verb is always inextricably linked with various species nuances. As a result, it is concluded that despite the unlimited number of methods of action, the practical needs of studying the verb system impose certain restrictions on linguists, which confirms the thesis of the instability and variability of the inventory of methods of action. Fundamental is the primary division of verbs into terminative and non- terminative. Linguists studying the system of a verb in various languages that do not have a grammatical category of a aspectconsider the mode of action mainly through the prism of word-formation formants, while Slavists are also interested in the mode of action expressed by verb aspect.
