Clinical dynamic and therapy of withdrawal syndrome in alcoholism in men and women at later age

In order to study alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) in persons at later age (more than 60 years), complex clinical investigation of 462 patients (391 men and 71 women) with alcohol dependence (ICD-10: F10.2-10.7) has been carried out. According to sign of age of primary seeking for addiction psychiatrist (before or after 60 years) in every group, patients with early or late onset of alcoholism respectively have ben distinguished. For men with late onset of alcoholism relatively lesser severity of withdrawal syndrome manifestations with some soma-tovegetative disturbances in the kind of tremor and cephalgia against the background of anxious affect is typical. For women, AWS with severe affective disorders in the kind of anxiety, intermittent with agitation combined with somatovegetative disorders is typical. Revealed traits of AWS in this contingent of patients require differentiated treatment and preventive measures.
