A clinical and epidemiological study has been conducted to establish the prevalence of elderly alcoholism in the South Urals region of Russia from 2003 through 2009. It revealed while the total number of patients had declined, the number of senior addicts (60 years of age and older) had increased. It also revealed that absolute and relative rates of hospitalized patients with severe forms of alcohol addiction had gone up, noting that frequency of undergoing therapy with alcoholism and alcoholic psychosis is five times as great in males as in females.
