The article describes the cognitive-oriented approach to teaching students writing academic essays. The author identifies eight models of the Russian academic essays and presents their cognitive and pragmalinguistic features. The research distinguishes three stages of work process regarding these models. The author proves the consistency of learning starting with the simple models (based on gestalt) and ending with the most difficult ones (based on the concept-script).
