In pre-revolutionary historiography, the emergence, course, and causes of the defeat of the Kokand Uprising, which took place in 1873‒1876, were studied by representatives of Russian historiography, including military orientalists, researchers in the field of oriental studies, and Russian travelers. Some of these authors were eyewitnesses to the historical events of the 1870`s and wrote works of various content and genres. A distinguishing feature of the works from this period is the fact that almost all authors were direct participants in the events and were on the front lines of the fighting. The information in these works details the course of events in chronological order and contains specific facts about the individuals involved in the attacks, the names of cities and villages that were attacked, as well as the military forces. The most important events described in the works of pre-revolutionary authors during the uprising of Pulat-Khan (1873‒1876) are the “winter campaign”, which began in December 1875, and the clashes between Andijan and Eki-Suu. As evidenced by the materials of these authors, it is clear that the local population living in the cities of Osh, Andijan, and Eki-Suu waged organized military actions against the Russian troops.
