The article is devoted to the analysis of a footnote in the novel «Under the Hill» by Aubrey Beardsley, who talks about the French and English painting of XVII-XIX century. The comments of Beardsley considered in the context of the aesthetic movement of the late XIX century (J. Ruskin, W. Pater), collection of aphorisms «Table Talk» and graphics work of Beardsley. Conflicting attitudes of Beardsley to Lorrain, Turner, Corot, to the Impressionists express the aesthetic views of the artist. The contrast between Turner and Corot and Flemish painter stresses lyricism, restraint and hidden intimate experiences of English graphic. However, Beardsley, like Turner, being a brilliant artist, wanted to supplement their figures verbal comments.
