The Russian Musical Society, a concert and educational organization, has become an integral part of the musical life of the Russian Empire for over half a century. The opening of its branches throughout the country gave a strong impetus to the development of musical education and culture, and the professional competence of versatile musicians - teachers and graduates of schools and conservatories affiliated with the Society -has been proven by time: it is no coincidence that the Russian performing school became the best in the 20th century. On the example of the Kishinev period in the activity of the Russian composer Vladimir Rebikov, the article describes the history of the foundation of the local department of the Russian Musical Society and the musical college affiliated with it. The stage of formation of the Moldavian professional musical culture through socio-cultural contacts with the representatives of the Russian performing school is considered. In conclusion, the author notes that it is rather difficult to overestimate the importance of Rebikov's activity, since it directly influenced the formation of the professional musical culture in the region, and the foundation of the local Department of the Russian Musical Society determined the direction of national pedagogical and per-forming cultures for a long time.
