The article is devoted to the concept of “recognition” of the American philosopher F. Fukuyama in its connection with the problems of contemporary nationalist extremism and terrorism. Over the past decade, the world has made a sharp turn from multiculturalism to nationalism and aggression, which is reflected in the growth of local extremism, which has an ethnocultural coloring. In the context of these changes, the author made an attempt to trace the evolution of the views of Fukuyama from the postulation of the triumph of liberal democracy in the work “The End of History and the Last Man” to a deep rethinking of the original ideas in the last book “Identity. The desire for recognition and the policy of rejection”. The phenomenon of terrorism is considered in the article as a radical means of struggle for recognition based on the concepts of “timos”, “megalothymia”, “isothymia” introduced by Plato in the “State” dialogue explored by Fukuyama in the current sociocultural situation.
