Regeneration of ecosystem assets, as part of natural resource capital and means of production, leads, in the process of creating economic value, to the formation of ecosystem services provided to end consumers and which are the basis for the development of tourist and recreational areas. Suppliers of ecosystem services account for about 70% of all economic entities, which is a key feature of tourist and recreational areas. An increase in the costs of preventing and mitigating the negative consequences and damage from natural disasters caused by the degradation of ecosystems causes an increase in average annual economic losses, a decrease in the future usefulness of ecosystem services, a decrease in the potential and competitiveness of tourist and recreational areas, which necessitates the development of conceptual approaches aimed at reducing negative impacts and improving economic efficiency. Maintaining the current and potential balanced and efficient use of ecosystem assets, maintaining the long-term ability to produce and provide a wide range of ecosystem services is ensured by the ecosystem approach and monitoring its effectiveness. The lack and incompleteness of primary data, the underdevelopment of existing assessment methods make monitoring difficult, necessitating its development through data collection and analysis, risk assessment and minimization, as well as the development of strategies for decision-making. The article reveals the basics of the formation of the ecosystem approach, its relevance and prospects, and proposes tools for the effectiveness of monitoring for the purposes of sustainable development of both key sectors of the economy and tourist and recreational territories in general.
