The article analyses the well-known novel "Cranford" (1853) by Gaskell and her less famous historical novella "My Lady Ludlow " (1858). The stress is done on the artistic means of depiction of the conflict of cultures: British and French. Also, the paper deals with the historical details of everyday life in the ancient Rome and some characters of the ancient myths. These two things are used by the author as means of creation of the literary images of characters that portray people of the different culture. Geert Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory is used to compare the above mentioned cultures.
