Enhancing the competitiveness of higher education is one of the current priorities of the Russian Federation, as outlined in the “Concept of the Humanitarian Policy of the Russian Federation Abroad” and the “Concept of International Scientific and Technical Cooperation of the Russian Federation. ” A key task for universities and their academic staff is to increase the number of international students in Russian universities within a competitive international environment. Despite a clear societal demand for university lecturers capable of competing in the international educational market, the development of theoretical and methodological foundations for the competitiveness of academic staff in teaching specialized subjects to international students in English has not been conducted systematically. Furthermore, the process of institutionalizing the conceptual and terminological framework for this phenomenon remains incomplete. The study aims to define the essence, specifics, and structural components of the concept “competitiveness of a university lecturer in teaching specialized subjects to international students in English. ” Analysis and synthesis of scientific literature were used to define the key concept of “competitiveness of a university lecturer in teaching specialized subjects to international students in English. ” Comparison and abstraction were applied to identify the key features and specifics of the concept. The application of a systems approach allowed for: structuring the terminological framework by identifying a hierarchy of elements and eliminating terminological ambiguity. The decomposition method was used to identify the specific competencies of a competitive university lecturer in teaching specialized subjects in English. A terminological analysis was conducted of the concepts “competition,” “ability,” “personal competitiveness,” “competitiveness of a university lecturer,” and “teaching specialized subjects in English (EMI – English as a Medium of Instruction). Five components of lecturer competitiveness were identified: motivational-reflective, personal-professional, activity-behavioral, organizational-corporate, and market-oriented. The key EMI teaching competencies identified are: linguistic, methodological-pedagogical, intercultural-communicative, digital-technological, and reflective. The set of competencies identified can serve as a basis for creating professional development and retraining programs for lecturers delivering English Medium Instruction programs to international students.
