The article examines the problem of constructing cultural identity through the prism of the fundamental dichotomy of “self – other”. In the context of increasing globalization and intercultural interaction, this opposition is becoming a key mechanism for selfdetermination of both individuals and social groups. The main attention is paid to the axiological (value) core of this process, since it is the value systems that act as the main markers for distinguishing between “self – other”. The methodological basis of the study is interdisciplinary and includes hermeneutic, dialogic and comparative approaches. The work traces the evolution of understanding the dichotomy from the ancient opposition to modern concepts of dialogue of cultures. Scientific novelty lies in the synthesis of philosophical and theoretical concepts (hermeneutics of H.G. Gadamer, dialogics of V.S. Bibler) and applied cultural models of complex analysis of mechanisms of identity formation.
