Constructivism as a theory of knowledge and learning is the subject of numerous theoretical and empirical research in social scientific disciplines from different perspectives: from advocacy to refutation.Exemplified by radical and social constructivism, this paper presents the different “faces” of constructivism, the epistemology of constructivism, the scopes and contradictions in its interpretations and pedagogical implications. Special attention is directed towards learning and teaching in light of constructivism and towards the concept of “constructivist pedagogy”.
