Being one of the ontological foundations of national anthropogenesis, color dominants occupy an important place among the universal values of culture. they reflect the psychology, the worldview of the people, represent a system of moral and ethical norms. Since the times of Ancient Russia, the red color has been considered special. Characterized by a connotative orientation, it acquires semantic diversity, symbolizing sunlight, life and blood, war and love. The article examines the evolution of this phenomenon, the metamorphoses that “red” acquires in the language of culture in various periods of history. The analysis of the traditional picture of the world in the aspect of color semantics helps to identify the specifics of the largely lost conceptual content. Nevertheless, the coloristic language of the past does not disappear without a trace: it includes universal elements of national existence and therefore is an essential component of national culture.
