The purpose of the article is to characterize the contribution of a prominent Russian teacher of the second half of the XIX century, Lev Nikolaevich Modzalevsky (1837-1896) to Russian science, culture and education. Materials and methods . Relying on the provisions of the axiological methodological approach and the use of the biographical research method, the following tasks are solved in the article: the introduction into scientific circulation of a number of little-known facts of his biography, the analysis of the theoretical and practical activities of L. N. Modzalevsky, the disclosure of his relations with K. D. Ushinsky and some other domestic figures of education. The main content . L. N. Modzalevsky is shown as the first Russian scientist in the field of national historical and pedagogical comparative studies and the history of pedagogy and education. Examples of his poetic creativity are given. Conclusion . The conclusion is made about the significance of Modzalevsky's legacy, about the need for its further study and use in the pedagogical process.
