This literature review analyzes the relationship between personality and optimism as relevant psychological variables for the mental health of university students, from a salutogenic perspective. It explores how certain personality traits and an optimistic disposition can act as protective factors against stress and promoters of well-being in the university context. The evidence linking personality, particularly the Big Five Model, with psychological adjustment and academic performance is reviewed. Likewise, the role of optimism as a resource for better emotional regulation, less procrastination, and greater life satisfaction is examined. The analysis of the interrelation of both variables suggests that personality influences optimistic tendencies, and that together, they enhance adaptive coping and optimal functioning, key elements of the salutogenic approach. It is concluded on the importance of considering these factors in the design of interventions that promote mental health in the university population.
