In this article, through a lens of expressionism aesthetics as one of the important compositional elements of two contemporary Austrian writers’ works (Jelinek and E.T.Bernhard) are considered: landscape as a symbol of time and scene; as a plot beginning; as a form of psychologism; as a form of the author's presence. Conclusion. It should be said that in many ways the expressionistic prose of contemporary Austrian writers demonstrates avoiding from the once friendly, good unity of Man and Nature, avoiding carried to the point of absurdity, despair and disaster. After all, the very direction in art emerged as “an acute, painful reaction to the ugliness of the beginning of the 20th century civilization.”
