The article addresses the relevance of studying adaptation in science. It outlines definitions of social adaptation and describes the levels of adaptation: physiological, psychological, and social. A theoretical review of literature is provided, where various psychologists examine this phenomenon. The article presents the results of an empirical study on the personal characteristics (personality traits, emotional states) of unemployed women with different levels of socio-psychological adaptation - high and low. Differences in personal characteristics were identified between adapted unemployed women and those with low adaptation levels. The former group is characterized by sociability, a willingness to cooperate with others, moderate norm-compliance in behavior, receptiveness to new ideas, calmness, and self-confidence, while the latter group shows communication difficulties, reduced norm-compliance, conservatism, anxiety, and a lack of self-confidence.
