The article is devoted to the comparative analysis of Mongolian and Buryat personal names collected from high school students in Mongolia and the Republic of Buryatia. The students (born in the 2000s) hadparticipatedin our study of contemporary naming trends as respondents. A shortreview of scholarly publications on onomastics published in Mongolia and Buryatiais is presented. The authors are led to believe that the naming ofa newbornchild in a contemporary societyis still viewed as a very important step in one’s life, which confirms a “sacredness” of a personal name. The study identifies major trends in onomastic repertoire among the Mongols and the Buryatsand presents the use frequency of certainpersonal names in the analysed onomastic lexicon.Additionally original, Buddhist and borrowed personal names in Mongolic onomastic lexiconare analysed from the semantic and morphological point of view.
