Linguistic factors of Cumbria oiconymy formation in the period of Anglo-Saxon сonquest

This paper is aimed to demonstrate the outcomes of study on oiconymy formation processes in Cumbria, the north-western county of England. Oiconym means a proper name of place for any kind of settlement: a city, a town, a village, etc. Studying oiconyms is of great importance as oiconyms demonstrate an inconceivable survivability and they have an inherent feature of keeping relict details fixed in appellatives of oiconymic etymons, which had been lost in other strata of the vocabulary. Forming of Cumbria settlement names in the Anglo-Saxon period has been considered on two levels: linguistic and extra linguistic ones. This paper presents extra-linguistic factors forming the Cumbria oiconymy in the period of Anglo-Saxon conquest.
