The article deals with the problem of forming the communicative competence of adolescents, demanded in modern society. The potential of project-research activities with linguistic content in the context of children's public associations and hobby clubs is explored as an effective method for its development. Based on the component composition of the communicative competence, the most appropriate project-research activities for adolescents are identified. These include linguistic projects and research carried out by middle and high school students as part of the work of the children's social club. It is noted that in most cases such activity is initiated by the students themselves, which indicates their formed motivation. As a result of consultations on projects with teachers, participation in reports, competitions and conferences, it has been noted that these activities develop the communication skills of adolescents through their active involvement in the communicative environment of the school, which requires the ability to structure and present thoughts orally and in writing, to lead a discussion and to argue a point of view. The external high evaluation of the results of adolescents' project-research activities at conferences and competitions allows this educational form to be recognized as highly effective and conducive to un-locking the communicative potential of schoolchildren.
