Literary archetypes in the Gogol’s Petersburg novelettes are analyzing from the point of view of the border’s functions (http://az.lib.ru/g/gogolx_n_w/). In this article was made an attempt to define hidden meanings of the Gogol’s text by this analysis. Similarities and differences between the characters of Gogol’s novelettes and archetypal images can be analyzed by means of the differentiative border’s function. By means of the isolating function - explore spatial archetypes, which present in the Gogol’s Petersburg novelettes. The comparison of ways of crossing metaphorical borders by characters of the Gogol’s novelettes and by the characters of other texts (folklore and literature) enables not only to explore these characters better, but also to understand their motivations and consequences of their actions. Conclusion. Using the theory of the isolating border’s function gave the possibility to define the locus’s properties of the city in the Petersburg novelettes, its exceptional features and qualities. The analysis of reversible and irreversible crossing of metaphorical borders (moral and etc.) by the characters of Gogol’s novelettes and the characters of the other works of literature allowed to further explore motivations of their actions, and also to define similarities and differences between archetypal stories and stories of Gogol’s novelettes.
