Masquerade in “A hero of our time” by Lermontov

The article analyzes the symbolic function of masks in connection with the problem of self-identification of the characters in the “A Hero of Our Time” by Lermontov. The author reveals the important features of the fancy action of the novel, and shows how the installation on view inherent for the masquerade is realized. The characteristic elements of the fancy in appearance and speech of the heroes are specially considered and the style of the fancy behavior is studied. As a result of analysis, the author argues that masquerade intrigue involved in the plot of a trial. At the same tune the mask associated with the plot of a trial opens its metaphysical content. All this allows us - in a new way - to read the dramatic story of relations among Lermontov’s characters.
