The article is devoted to the fine arts of Kalmykia. It clearly demonstrates the fate of the artistic heritage brought from Central Asia by the Mongolian-speaking Oirats, which was further developed in Russia. Largely due to the ethnic self-awareness of the authors, brought up, as a rule, in the realistic traditions of European culture, it represents an extensive material of the types and genres of art. In the interrelationships of heritage and modernity, creativity that sensitively reflects on changes in society is determined by the spiritual culture of the people preserving traditions. In their interpretation, peculiarly expressed in works, tendencies of the artistic process in Kalmykia of the 60-90s of the XX century are revealed. Analysis of creative activity requires the involvement of methods of a wide range of scientific disciplines: history, ethnosociology, philosophy, culture, psychology and, of course, art studies. In such a subsystem of artistic culture as fine art, it is possible to realize this, referring to the traditional world view of the creative personality. Archetypes of the original consciousness inspire the professional fine arts of Kalmykia. In the picturesque heritage of the People's Artist of the RSFSR G.O. Rokchinsky (1923-1993), considered ethnogenetic code of culture, reveals an organic continuity of traditions that determine the integral existence of the cultural heritage of the people, and the possibilities of their source study interpretation.
