Man's media culture: essence, components and formation levels

The meaning of “media culture” concept, which is quite close to the concept of “culture”, is discussed. The role of “media culture” in the society is discussed. The functions of “culture” as a system and functions of “media culture” as a subsystem are analyzed from the point of view of their interrelation, intersections and interinfiuence. The concept of “information” is considered as the main resource and product of media culture. Important approaches for information defining: semantic, pragmatic and axiological, are singled out. The following components of student’s media culture formation are defined: values and objectives, cognitive, activity, evaluation and correction. The formation of the components in students is considered at four levels: impermissible, critical, sufficient and optimal. Each level includes all students’ activities in working with information that are criteria of the component formation
