On the applicability of the frame modelling method in translation based on the ‘FrameNet’ system of knowledge mapping

This article discusses the issue of using frames as special units to construct the mental space of the translator, or to be used as a knowledge database as exemplified in the English language corpus system called FrameNet. The analysis of the FrameNet system’s target tasks has enabled the author to come to certain theoretical assumptions concerning the possibilities and potentialities of the frame system as such, which entails a deeper insight on text understanding and a demonstration of the dynamic and cognitive nature of frame representations. This is seen as important in the area of translation. Using Ch. Fillmore’s theory as my theoretical model, as well as the conceptual models of other renowned cognitive linguists and the basic principles of psycholinguistics the author analyses the frame structures of the translator’s mind, thus developing the idea of it being well-mapped and heuristic. This is also proven by the ability to anticipate and select certain cognitive strategies in translation.
