The method of minimal coverings and other methods for fractal analysis of surface relief roughness

Different methods of fractal dimension estimating are given and compared in the article, the minimal covering method is described in details. The basic properties of fractal index are formulated and proved and the factors which influence its values are discussed. Some illustrative examples are given. The way how to proceed the fractal analysis of a surface with help of fractal index is shown.
