The article deals with the system of teaching the subject of physical culture in educational institutions of the USSR in the first half of the XX century. It is shown that a significant milestone in the development of physical culture and sport in the USSR was the emergence of "Vsevobuch", of which physical culture became an integral part. It represented a new approach to the physical culture movement, based on class principles and linking sport with such concepts as patriotism and responsibility for the fate of the Motherland. Vsevobuch instructors were mostly athletes who passed on their skills to conscripts. The best skiers, gymnasts and skaters trained young people and formed the core of the Supreme Council of Physical Culture. For decades, the Red Square in Moscow admired the strong young people who in the difficult conditions of wartime not only preserved, but also strengthened their strength, ready at any moment to stand up in defense of the Motherland.
