This article is devoted to the analysis and justification of the choice of methodological approaches to modeling environmental and economic security at the regional level. The development of a model of ecological and economic security of the region meets the requirements of the Strategy of scientific and Technological Development of Russia in terms of preparing the state for the growing global challenges leading humanity to an environmental catastrophe. They have not yet made themselves felt in full force, but directly or indirectly generated by the consumer attitude to nature and the careless use of the latest technologies. This actualizes the task of improving theoretical-methodological and practice-oriented research using interdisciplinary approaches, principles and concepts and implies the solution of a two-pronged task: first, the development of a fundamentally new categorical basis, in which the main importance will be given to the interrelations in the system “ecology-economy-population”; second, methods and tools for assessing, monitoring, forecasting and managing risks of environmental and economic security of the region. The choice of methodological approaches, principles, methods and tools that are adequate to the goals and objectives of modeling the ecological and economic security of the region will allow us to identify the most significant factors and conditions and use the results to improve the strategic planning process in the context of environmental and economic risk management.
