The article deals with the problems of understanding the realities of the process of formation of pedagogical science and education in terms of methods, means and procedures of historical knowledge. The concepts defining approaches to the construction of the methodology of historical knowledge are analyzed. Among those who determined the theoretical face of historical knowledge from the end of the XIX century to the present time are F. Nietzsche, V. Windelband, H. Rickert, W. Dilthey, M. Weber, K. Popper, M. Heidegger, whose works became reflexive basis for this research.
