This article defines the cognitive potential of methods of working with historical sources of local lore content in the process of teaching the school subject of history. The paper substantiates the effectiveness of the use of historical sources as a scientific basis for the organization of research work of students in history lessons, which makes the process of historical education more successful, contributes to the formation of historical consciousness of schoolchildren. The learning process when using these techniques becomes more diverse, and students acquire the skills of independent search for new knowledge. The author of the article conducted a survey of students and revealed the degree of effectiveness of the studied methods of work on history
